Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Coach's Corner.
- Asian Handicap
- A handicap betting system that eliminates the draw outcome and gives a team a fractional or whole line advantage or disadvantage.
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money you have set aside for placing bets.
- Bet Slip
- The digital record that lists your chosen wagers, stake amounts, and potential payouts.
- Bonus
- Extra funds or free bets offered by a sportsbook to attract new customers or reward existing ones.
- Cash Out
- A feature that lets you settle a bet before the event ends, locking in a profit or limiting a loss.
- Cashback
- A rebate that returns a percentage of your net losses over a set period.
- Edge
- Your perceived advantage over the sportsbook's odds in a given wager.
- Free Bet
- A bonus credit provided by a sportsbook that can be used to place a bet, usually without needing your own money.
- In-Play
- Bets placed after a match has started, with odds that update as the game progresses.
- Juice
- The commission that a sportsbook charges for taking a bet, usually built into the odds.
- Kelly Criterion
- A formula used to determine the optimal size of a bet based on your perceived edge and odds.
- KYC
- Know Your Customer – the process a sportsbook uses to verify a bettor’s identity and prevent fraud.
- Line Movement
- The change in odds or point spreads over time, often driven by betting volume or new information.
- Moneyline
- A bet on which team will win a match, with odds expressed as a positive or negative number.
- Odds Boost
- A promotion that increases the payout odds on a specific bet, giving you a higher potential return.
- Over/Under
- A wager on whether the total number of points or goals scored in a match will be higher or lower than a set line.
- Parlay
- A single bet that links two or more individual wagers and pays out only if all of them win.
- Point Spread
- A handicap given to the underdog team to make both sides of a bet equally attractive.
- Rollover Requirement
- The total amount of bets you must place before bonus funds become withdrawable.
- Stake
- The amount of money you risk on a single bet.
- Steam
- Rapid, widespread movement of betting lines caused by a large volume of bets on one side.
- Units
- A standardized way to measure the size of a bet, usually expressed as a fraction of your bankroll.
- Value Bet
- A bet where the odds offered are higher than the true probability of the outcome, giving you an expected profit.
- Wagering Requirement
- The number of times you must bet a bonus amount before you can withdraw any winnings.
